Gelatin Gummies Recipe: A Simple Way to Support Gut Health, Skin, Sleep & Hormones
When we look at how our ancestors traditionally ate, they consumed far more than just muscle meat. They ate what is referred to as a “nose-to-tail” diet. This means that they regularly consumed connective tissues, skin, collagen-rich cuts of meat, bones, and slow-cooked broths that naturally provided amino acids and minerals supportive for the body. Today, most people are not eating this way consistently. We tend to eat more muscle meats, like chicken breast and ground beef, which lack many of the collagen-rich components.
Bone broth is one of the best ways to help fill in these nutritional gaps, but let’s be honest…in the middle of summer, a hot mug of broth is not always appealing. Cue: homemade gelatin gummies. These are one of the easiest, most realistic ways to incorporate gelatin into your routine in a way that feels refreshing and enjoyable. They require only a few ingredients, take less than 10 minutes to prepare, and can easily become part of your weekly wellness routine!
What Is Gelatin?
Gelatin is a protein derived from collagen-rich animal tissues including skin, bones, and connective tissue. It has a long history of traditional use across cultures through slow-cooked broths, stocks, aspics, and other collagen-rich foods. The highest food sources of glycine include bone broth, slow cooked tough meats like pot roast or pulled pork, skin-on and bone-in poultry (chicken wings, thighs, whole roasted chicken), pork rinds and bacon.
Gelatin is especially rich in amino acids like glycine, which play important roles in:
Gut lining support
Skin health
Collagen production
Sleep quality
Recovery
Joint health
Detoxification pathways
Glutathione production
Gelatin is technically not considered a complete protein because they lack the amino acid tryptophan. This means that you shouldn’t rely on it as your main protein source, but 15g daily has been shown to actually improve essential amino acid metabolism.
Benefits of Gelatin Gummies
The Glycine Supports Detoxification
One of the most valuable amino acids found in gelatin is glycine. Glycine is a key component needed for the production of glutathione, one of the body’s most important antioxidants involved in liver detoxification pathways. Supporting healthy levels of glutathione can reduce oxidative stress in the body.
Supports Gut Health
Gelatin is often used in gut-supportive nutrition approaches because it helps support the integrity of the gut lining. Many people also find that incorporating gelatin-rich foods helps support digestion and overall digestive comfort. This is one reason why collagen-rich foods have historically been emphasized in more ancestral and traditional ways of eating.
Supports Skin & Collagen Production
Collagen and gelatin provide amino acids that help support the body’s own collagen production. Skin is a reflection of multiple internal systems working together, including digestion, hydration, inflammation, stress levels, and nutrient intake. Because gelatin supports several of these foundational systems simultaneously, it can become a supportive addition to a more holistic skin health approach. It can help also help with hair strength, nail strength, and skin elasticity.
Improves Sleep Quality
The glycine in gelatin gummies is considered a calming amino acid that plays a role in relaxation, nervous system support, and sleep quality. It is grounding, regulating and restorative. Glycine has been shown to help you fall asleep more easily, get deeper sleep and help with circadian rhythm regulation. This is why I love making gummies with tart cherry juice, which also help with sleep support. It’s a great nighttime ritual!
What Juice to Use:
I personally love a more tart and sour gummy that is not overly sweet. I also want to juice that is used to be functionally supporting my body.
Tart Cherry Juice: is one of my favorite options for these gummies because it adds yummy flavor and health benefits. Tart cherry juice naturally contains melatonin and antioxidant compounds that may help support sleep and recovery. It is commonly used for muscle soreness, exercise recovery, inflammation support and sleep support.
Cranberry juice: also works nicely if you prefer a more tart/sour flavor profile. Cranberry juice is great for gut health because it contains prebiotics. It also helps support a healthy urinary tract system.
Pomegranate Juice: acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, and contains polyphenols that reduce inflammation, support the gut barrier, and promote overall digestive health
You can choose 1 or combine 2 of them! Make sure to get pure juice and not ones with added sugar.
